George Forss
Silver Gelatin Photographs
1978-2000
At the end of this past June, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater
and Broadcasting were considering rules that would require any
group of two or more people who wanted to use a camera in a
single public location for more than half an hour to get a city
permit and 1 million dollars in liability insurance. The same
requirements would apply to any group of five or more people
who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than
10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment!
This news spread like wildfire throughout the city and beyond
to photographers and filmmakers. Online petitions immediately
challenged the insane proposals. Within days, the city backed
down and all is right with the world. Many thousands of people
commented as to how New York City is the most photographed place
in the world!
George usually set up at least three cameras in each location
as we worked on the Access project. He went from one camera
to the other, seeing what was happening with light, shadow and
activity. We had access to remarkable places, but time...lots
of it...was a major factor in getting the perfect shot.
